After playing a lot of online MMO's over the years I thought I would throw out a topic where myself and any others can add some experiences from other (to remain nameless) games that impacted the game in negative or positive ways. Take from it what you will.. XD

I admit this is a completely blind suggestion thread as I have not even seen your beta...

Forums
Get a good set of mods and admins away from yourself and keep a high turnover with them.

Create strict guidelines for them or they'll quickly become a boys club so to speak with lots of 'favours' hand outs and beyond that just creates resentment.

Game
Avoid ingame economic/strategic benefits for $$. It may get you a ton of money at the start but in the long run it kills the game and gets you bad reviews to put it plain and simply. Alternatively i'd suggest something like a build line or a better UI, or more information or something akin. Something still useful but not game breaking like a mass of repeatedly purchasable resources and protection.

Avoid direct p-p trading. I'd personally suggest a limited trading system with a universally set valuation ratio for all trades. (IE. We know 50tonnes Naq is worth 10,000 slaves, so that's a ratio of 1:200, a value everyone has to trade at). Give people the ability to effect the ratio a little, but nothing overwhelming so the market can still be played but not abused.

Don't give people excessive starting protection at the start as it can create an uncompetitive lead generated by a lucky hour of hits on other players that will shadow the game for probably a few years afterwards so long as the person who gets lucky isn't a moron. If everyone is going to be protected then I would suggest it be for about an hour after start so everyone has chance to spend their resources and not sit, forget their account and let it build up to be hit.

Much love, Semps.

Oh, and restrict multiple registrations from the same IP address for the first 4 weeks.
;) Otherwise people will simply register an account, hit it for starting resources with their main acc, and then delete the 'newly created' account. Hehe.

Of course, you might have a completely different solution / system, Shadowing.. so let's see how it looks. :D

Nice topic Semper

I can answer a few of these actually and mention a few additional things.
Although I plan to make a more open post listing more game information soon.
I did mention some more game spoilers on the introduction thread.
[li]Players will get flaged as a multi account if detected. I wont release the mechanic details on that though.
[/li]

[li]There is no player vs player trading with in the game. I did this for the very same reasons you mention. There will eventually be a kinda like Galatic Stock market where you buy into alliances stock. According to how an alliance is affected with War determines what their stock is worth. This feature wont be in BETA though. An alliance must hit a certain amount of players before they are consider a stock choice for the Galaxy.
[/li]

[li]Mods will be added soon. Mods will not only look over the forum but the game as well. They will even have access to anti multi account tools. I will choose Mods according to forum posts. Unlike alot of games our mods wont be rude or on power trips[/li]

[li]Players will be rewarded a little for finding unknown bugs with in the game through the in game bug report system. It wont be so much where it puts them at a large benifit but I feel they should get a little something for taking the time to submit the bug.[/li]

[li]The froum it self is a little undecorated but thats only due to a limited time to work on it. Since working on the forum would mean not working on the game. So I kept the forum simple and fast for now.[/li]
If fans really wish to support the game. Spreading the word and tweeting about it helps alot. Tell your co workers, facebook friends and tweet about it. At the moment its the best way to help the community.

I don't think you could have given me a better reply. Thank you for trying to build a game, not a business.

Having the same mods in game as on forums is interesting. I assume you would need some understanding of game development, code etc to become a mod then?
Also, In my opinion the forum needs a little restructuring. Could you add some more light hearted boards for people to get to know each other etc? In text based MMO's the community is 50% of the game.

Other than that, as Semper said, excellent replies so far. My hopes are high :D

I would like to see some sort of restriction on which players can attack which players. I have played MMO's before where there were a few people that started playing in the beginning and got so strong that anytime someone else started playing they were defeated in short order. In one game in particular I would play and I loved the game but stopped playing because I couldn't get anywhere as those who started playing the game when it first came out were so strong that there was no hope of fighting them and winning. A limitation like having to be in the same class (like system lord vs. system lord or under system lord vs. under system lord etc) would open it up more to those who are just starting the game and give "newbies" a fair chance to build up a power base.
